Islamic militants warn Egypt army on Sinai raids

CAIRO (AP) ? A statement by Islamic militants in Egypt's Sinai Peninsula warned the military against waging a security crackdown and manhunt of jihadis, asserting that they have not targeted Egyptians soldiers.

Wednesday's statement posted on a website which usually carries al-Qaida and similar groups' statements said the jihadis' primary target is Israel. It denied responsibility for the killing of soldiers two weeks ago and urged the army to "prevent bloodshed."

Islamic militants are believed to be behind the worst assault on troops from within Egypt in living memory when the 16 soldiers were gunned down while breaking their fast during the holy month of Ramadan on August 5.

The attacks prompted the military to launch an offensive in the increasingly volatile peninsula. Most operations there however remain limited and objectives are unclear.
