Peanuts thrown at black camerawoman at GOP meeting

A black camerawoman who works for CNN said Thursday that she was not surprised to have two people at the Republican National Convention throw peanuts at her and say "this is what we feed animals."

The two white people were immediately removed from the Tampa, Fla., convention arena by security officials on Tuesday, and their identities weren't revealed. The camerawoman, Patricia Carroll, wasn't able to tell definitively where they were from.

"This is Florida, and I'm from the deep South," Carroll, a 34-year-old Alabama native, told Maynard Institute blogger Richard Prince on Thursday. "You come to places like this, you can count the black people on your hand. They see us doing things they don't think I should do."

She said racism is a global issue and the incident could have happened on a street corner or at the Democratic convention, scheduled for next week in Charlotte, N.C.

GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney's campaign said Thursday that it has apologized to CNN for what happened.

"We find it absolutely deplorable. We condemn it in the highest possible way," said Russ Schriefer, strategist for the Romney campaign. "That behavior is just reprehensible."

CNN said Carroll was not interested in addressing the issue any further. She told Prince that she was hoping the story would go away.

"I can't change these people's hearts and minds," she said. "No, it doesn't feel good. But I know who I am. I'm a proud black woman. A lot of black people are upset. This should be a wake-up call to black people. ... People were living in euphoria for a while. People think we've gone further than we have."

Associated Press reporter Donna Cassata contributed to this story from Tampa, Fla.

Therapy After Losing a Baby and Before Adopting - Blogs

iStock 000014683658XSmall 1 300x199 Therapy After Losing a Baby and Before AdoptingToday we went to see a therapist who specializes in children?s therapy about our daughter Bella. Since I went through a really rough pregnancy and then a very traumatic loss of the boys, she?s exhibited behavior that I know comes from the feelings of having life continually altered in a big way.

While I was there, Sam and I mentioned we were looking for a therapist that specialized in our kind of loss, grief, and trauma. She also works with women and families that lose babies or young children, and she is the only one in all of our city at the moment that does so.

We have many reasons to see a therapist because of what happened, but our most compelling two at the moment are to be healthy parents who can express emotions in a real, but positive, sense ? and to prepare for our adopted child.

We know bringing home a child from another country, who has experienced the loss of a birth mother/father as well as been in the care of more than one person before a foster home will have their own emotional needs that must be met. Sam and I understand deeply that our loss needs to be addressed and managed before we can help a child who will need the healthiest family possible in his or her growing and healing process.

Can I tell you all something? This would be a lot easier right now to just act like we?re ok. That my Zoloft is working wonders and that?s all I need, that Sam has been through war and PTSD so he?s equipped to handle this, that Bella is in the terrible twos soon-to-be threes. But that?s not it. This process of grief and loss is getting more manageable, but it?s never going to be gone. Like the therapist said today, ?You will grieve forever because they were your sons.?

I really thought one day I?d just ? be all better. But I need to find my new normal, and I?m finally realizing what that phrase really means.

Even if our homestudy is turned down, we still have to do this. Sitting there today, I cried through the entire story of what had happened, and at the end felt such a sense of peace and relief in talking about it. Then to have someone on the other end who understood, who offered to help? That was amazing.

We are believers in therapy and all it offers. We?ve turned to it for our marriage, and for Sam?s alcoholism. Now we?ll use it to heal from the children we lost, help the one we have, and prepare for the ones to come.

Women's Health | Look Better By Tomorrow!

Last minute weekend plans? Here's how you can look hotter overnight.

FIRST STEP: Cut sugar, alcohol, sodium and refined carbs like white bread and pasta out of your diet and fibre intake to about 25g a day. All of this causes your body to retain water making you look and feel bloated.

SECOND STEP: Fill up on vegetables, protein and a little healthy fat the night before a big event or beach day. And limit starchy carbs. This combination revs up your metabolism and helps eliminate extra water weight. Try a meal of 113g of low-fat fresh fish (such as hake or dorado) drizzled with a flavourful low-fat spinach sauce. Serve with a side of steamed, non-starchy vegetables such as green beans.

THIRD STEP: Torch kilojoules and spike your metabolism with a fast-past strength circuit.

Try this: Do these moves with a two-kilojoule dumbbell. See the moves in sequence below with explanation.

1 Shuffle With Reach:
Begin in a squat position with your feet together, right arm extended behind you, left arm touching your right foot (A). Staying in a squat, lift your chest and bring your arms in front of you, elbows bent (B), then take five steps to the left. Bring your feet together, reaching your left hand behind you and your right hand down to your left foot (C). Reverse the movement to return to start. That?s one rep. Do four.

2 Squat To High Pull
Loop a resistance band around a low, sturdy object and grab one handle with both hands. Hold the band at waist height, arms extended straight in front of you, and back away until there?s no slack in the band. From that position, lower into a squat (A). As you stand, raise your arms overhead, keeping your arms straight and finishing with your elbows close to your ears (B). Lower back to the start position. That?s one rep. Do 15.

3 Single-Arm Chest Press With Rotation
Grab a dumbbell in your right hand and lie on your back on a stability ball, forming a straight line from your knees to your shoulders. Hold the dumbbell at chest height and rest your left hand on your hip (A). Straighten your right arm and press the dumbbell towards the ceiling and across your chest as you brace your abs and crunch up, lifting your shoulders off the ball (B). Return to start. That?s one rep. Do 10 to 12,?then repeat with your left arm.

4 Side Lunge To Shoulder Press
Stand with your feet hip-width apart and?hold a dumbbell in your left hand (A). Take a big step to the right and lower your body into a lunge, keeping your left leg straight (B). As you push off?your right leg to return to standing, curl the dumbbell towards your shoulder and press it above your head, finishing with your left arm straight and your elbow close to your ear (C). That?s one rep. Do eight to 12, then switch sides.

5 Reverse Lunge With Row
Loop a resistance band around a sturdy object at chest height and grab the handles with both hands, palms facing each other. Extend your arms straight in front of you and back away until there?s no slack. From that position, step back with your right foot and bend both knees to lower into a lunge (A). As you return to standing, quickly pull the handles towards your chest and squeeze your shoulder blades together (B). Return to?start. That?s one rep. Do 10, then repeat?with the left leg.

6 Step With Rear Leg Lift
Stand with your feet hip-width apart, shoulders back and arms at your sides. Step?forward with your left foot, bending your?left knee and shifting your weight onto your left foot (A). Straighten your knee and stand on your left leg, squeezing your glutes to lift your right leg as high behind you as you can without feeling it in your lower back, while bringing your arms straight overhead, elbows by your ears (B). That?s one rep. Do?15,?then switch legs and repeat.

7 Plank Sweep
Start in a push-up position, forming?a?straight line from shoulders to ankles. Bring your right?knee towards your left elbow (A). From that position, sweep your knee across your body to the outside of your right elbow (B). Return to start. That?s one rep. Repeat with the left knee and alternate until you?ve done eight to 10 reps on each side.

8 Kayaker
Grab a body bar or broomstick with?both hands and lie on your back on a stability ball. Extend your arms straight above you at chest height, brace your abs and crunch up to lift your shoulders off the ball. Hold this position for all the reps. Keeping your arms straight, pull the?left end of the bar to the left and allow your torso to rotate to the left (A). Bring the bar back across the middle and pull the right end to?the right, rotating your torso to the right (B). That?s one rep. Do 15.

SolarKiosk: An autonomous business unit for off-grid areas | VC4Africa

On a regular basis we put ventures who have registered on our platform in the spotlight. Today we talk to Sasha Kolopic, marketing manager at Solarkiosk GmbH in Berlin, who have developed an ?autonomous business enabler? for off-grid areas.

How does the SolarKiosk unit work?

?The Solarkiosk is powered by solar panels which are integrated into the roof structure of the kiosk. The kiosk also includes a battery that can store access energy to run the kiosk at night or during a stretch of bad weather. The kiosk can host a variety of devices, like refrigerators (which can keep medications cool), charging docks (for cell phones, LED lamps and LED flashlights for example), computers, even a TV so that community can watch a football match at night.?

Who are you targeting with this idea?

?Our primary target are people in so-called ?off-grid areas?, that is, people who do not have access to the electricity grid. Globally, that represents 16% of the world?s population. We want to enable people who have a drive for entrepreneurship and the desire the help their communities evolve by providing them with the means to help mitigate one of the biggest obstacles to many communities, which is lack of electricity. Ironically, the vast majority of those people live in areas where there is abundant sunshine throughout the year.

Additionally, in off-grid communities, 40% of daily income is spent on energy supplied by dirty, dangerous, and unsustainable fuels such as kerosene and firewood for example. We want to reduce their dependence on such fuels used for daily tasks and provide them with an alternative that is sustainable, safer, and over time much more affordable.?

Sending out kiosks equipped with solar panels is an interesting initiative. How did you come about this design?

?The initial idea belongs to one of our CEOs, Mr. Andreas Spiess. He was able to realize it with the help from our partners at Graft Architects, who designed the structure of the unit and are now partners of the company as well.? (More info in the TEDx video below, red)

Please explain the venture Solarkiosk Solutions?

?Solarkiosk Solutions is our subsidiary in Ethiopia as our head office is in Germany. They take care of the project management of our pilot project in Ethiopia and are responsible for seeking out and maintaining our connections with our local partners and operators.?

What business model have you adopted?

?The basic idea is that we as a company enter into a long-term business relationship with the local managers of the kiosks ? the operators. We want to enable them to run a successful business based on energy in areas where previously there was neither much business nor energy. We believe that this long-term relationship will allow us to bring solar energy into areas where previous efforts to do so were not always successful, because we not only bring the solar products and other hardware, but we can provide support and training as well.?

What team do you have working on Solarkiosk and what qualifies them to do the work they are doing?

?Our teams in Berlin and Addis Abeba comprise of highly qualified people, from the business side to manufacturing, with years of experience doing business in Africa, and most importantly, with the drive and positive energy we need in order to keep moving ahead with the project. Our people are our biggest asset.?

How will solarkiosks fit into the African setting?

?The Solarkiosk was created precisely with the African setting in mind from the very beginning. From the modular, transportable design all the way to the battery, we aimed to create a product that can handle a variety of challenges in order to be successful in Africa. Reactions so far have been very positive and enthusiastic!?

What road have you mapped out for Solarkiosk and how does VC4Africa fit into the picture?

?We are currently exploring the potential for entering other African markets. We find VC4Africa very important as it can provide us with a reliable network of experienced people who are just as passionate about the ideas and goals of projects like ours in Africa as we are.?

College football previews: Friday night games

Here are previews of the Top 25 teams in action Friday night:

No. 24 Boise State at No. 13 Michigan State, 8 p.m. (ESPN)

Line: Michigan State by 7

Series Record: First meeting

WHAT'S AT STAKE

As usual, the opener shapes up as the best chance on Boise State's schedule for the Broncos to prove themselves against a team from one of college football's top conferences. They beat Virginia Tech and Georgia to open the last two seasons. Michigan State puts a 14-game home winning streak on the line.

KEY MATCHUP

Boise State quarterback Joe Southwick against Michigan State's defense. Southwick makes his first career start after spending two seasons backing up star Kellen Moore. Southwick is 40 for 54 for 400 yards with two touchdown passes in his career at Boise State. The Spartans lost defensive lineman Jerel Worthy to the NFL but return pass-rushing threat William Gholston and linebacker Max Bullough. The Spartans allowed only 18 points a game last season.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Boise State: WR Matt Miller. With Moore and running back Doug Martin both gone, Miller may have a bigger role to fill after catching 62 passes for 679 yards and nine touchdowns last season.

Michigan State: QB Andrew Maxwell. The Spartans are replacing a talented quarterback too. Kirk Cousins is in the NFL now, leaving Maxwell to make his first career start this week.

FACTS & FIGURES

Boise State went 24-2 over the last two seasons. Michigan State went 22-5. ... Friday will mark the 12th night game in the 89-year history of Spartan Stadium. Michigan State is 7-4 in its previous 11 prime-time TV appearances at the venue. ... Boise State lost all four starters from last season's defensive line. ... Mark Dantonio's 44 wins are the most for a Michigan State coach in his first five seasons. ... Robert Prince takes over as Boise State's offensive coordinator after Brent Pease left to take the same job at Florida.

San Jose State at No. 21 Stanford, 10 p.m. (Pac-12 Network)

Line: Stanford by 26

Series Record: Stanford leads 50-14-1

WHAT'S AT STAKE

Redshirt junior Josh Nunes makes his first career start at quarterback and begins the post-Andrew Luck era in Stanford's first game since a 41-38 overtime loss to Oklahoma State in the Fiesta Bowl on Jan. 2. Junior college transfer David Fales also will make his first start at quarterback for San Jose State, which made great strides last year, going 5-7 in coach Mike MacIntyre's second season after posting a 1-12 record in 2010.

KEY MATCHUP

San Jose State's run defense vs. Stanford's run offense. Luck was hardly needed in Stanford's 57-3 romp over San Jose State last season. The Cardinal piled up 141 yards rushing on 40 carries and the Spartans could do nothing to slow a physical offensive line.

PLAYERS TO WATCH

Stanford: RB Stepfan Taylor. The senior running back could probably be penciled in this spot every week, but he could be especially important with a first-time starting quarterback in the opener. With 1,330 yards rushing last season, Taylor became just the third back in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in consecutive seasons, joining Darrin Nelson (1977-78) and Toby Gerhart (2008-09).

San Jose State: Fales. Any chance the Spartans have for an upset will fall on Fales to do something special. He completed 61.8 percent of his passes for 4,635 yards and 37 touchdowns in two seasons at Monterey Peninsula College before transferring to San Jose State before spring practice.

FACTS & FIGURES

Stanford has won the last four meetings. ... San Jose State's last victory against a ranked team was a 27-24 win over No. 9 TCU at Spartan Stadium on Nov. 4, 2000. The Spartans are winless against 19 ranked teams since. ... San Jose State had six fumbles and lost three in last year's season opener at Stanford Stadium. ... The annual contest is still referred to as the Bill Walsh Legacy Game. Walsh, the Hall of Fame coach of the 49ers, graduated from San Jose State and had two coaching stints at Stanford. Walsh's last stint (1992-94) came when Cardinal coach David Shaw was a wide receiver. Walsh died in 2007.

An Overview Of The Real Estate Market For Buyers

by author on Friday, August 31st, 2012 | Comments Off

Purchasing property can be both frightening and thrilling. If you do not know what you are doing, there are many pitfalls that can end up causing you long-term problems. Following the advice from this article will prevent you from making these mistakes.

It is essential to hire a trustworthy real estate agent. The Internet and the Better Business Bureau are great places to search for reliable agents. Good references often come from people you know: friends, co-workers, and family.

Include people who won?t be living in the house in your search for a new home. This person can be very helpful in noticing issues in the house that you missed. Ask them to become involved in the process also by asking questions of the realtor.

Stay in touch and communicate regularly with other investors in the real estate field. They may know of other properties available that could be suitable for you. This is a great way for you to be able to find a diamond in the rough that may have been overlooked by other investors.

TIP! If you are interested in a rental property, make inquiries regarding who is responsible for the gardening before you sign the lease. You should know that in some cases, a renter is expected to take care of a yard or garden or to pay someone to do the job.

Do not let the price of a house you are interested in be influenced by the fact it has a view. Not all potential buyers perceive a nice view as highly, so if you pay too much, it might be hard to resell at that price. Subsequently it is best to only pay for the view because you want to.

Go for the home of your dreams. Some investors say that it isn?t a good time for buying or selling larger houses, but some disagree. This may be the best time to buy your dream property because housing prices are expected to rise.

If you are going to interview your own real estate agent, you should ensure your questions are planned out properly. Ask them about their techniques and the kind of results they usually get, and how familiar they are with the area you are looking at. A good agent will be able to answer all your questions.

Before you search for your new house, review your credit reports. Once you?ve gotten a copy of the report, examine each entry to find out if there are any mistakes. Your credit report should be in good standing when you are going to buy a home.

TIP! You need to have your goals arranged by their importance when you are attempting to negotiate a deal for any piece of real estate. Identify the issues at hand, and lay out your expectations.

Before purchasing a home, have a professional inspector look at it. Do not try to save money by asking someone you know do this job because you will have no recourse if something goes wrong.

If you have kids, you need to make sure there is enough room for the family. Your new home should be equipped for safety; consider this wisely if your home has a swimming pool or steep stairs. A house that was previously owned by a family with children might feature a lot of built-in safety devices.

If you have your eye on expensive piece of commercial property, get a reputable partner in on the investment. This will help you qualify for the commercial mortgage loan easier as you proceed in buying the property. Having a partner gives you an extra person to help pay the necessary down payment and any needed credit in order to be qualified for a loan.

Do your homework and research rental properties. If you want to buy some rental property, do not buy it until you have looked at the rental records for two years. This will give you an accurate accounting of the property?s income stream. Most lenders also need you to prove you can pay for the loans before they will consider issuing them to you.

TIP! Be sure to find a partner you can trust to work together with, when buying expensive and large commercial property. This can make it easier for you to get qualified for the loan needed when buying the property.

Make sure you do your homework before investing in any new property. Lots of people dive into the real estate market too fast, and they end up losing much money and time because they made unwise purchases. Before purchasing any type of property, make certain you research the whole area, the property?s age, the area?s crime rate, etc.

Prior to signing a lease, speak with the future landlord about the gardening, if you?ve got a garden. Certain rentals make it a requirement for you to clean the garden or yard on your own or hire someone else to do this. Other landlords treat the agreement more like a condo and include outdoor maintenance in the rent.

Sellers will warm to you when you carry around a letter of mortgage approval with you. It is best to get this approval letter immediately to avoid delays that will cost time and money.

When you are ready to make an offer on a home, ask the sellers to consider financial incentives such as help with any closing costs. Many buyers try to get the other party to ?buy down? their rate of interest for a short period of time. If adding financial incentives to an offer, the seller may not negotiate your selling price, though.

TIP! If you are trying to buy a building in which you plan to establish a business, choose a good neighborhood. By placing yourself in an unattractive location, you dissuade potential customers.

When looking at details about potential home purchases, remember to check for adequate parking if you own an automobile. This will be very important if the house doesn?t have a driveway. If parking is not readily available, you might just find yourself walking miles to your parked car. This is especially difficult when adverse weather is a consideration.

Keep these tips in mind and you?ll have a big advantage as you look for properties. Use this advice to ensure that you are getting the property that is right for you. Buy with confidence now, because you know what to

Everything You Need To Know About Video Gaming | The best junk ...

August 29, 2012 admin Uncategorized

?

?

Video gaming is not without its faults. You will gain advice from the article below that will help you make the most of the time you spend gaming. Keep reading to learn more.

Before you start buying games that you think your kids will enjoy, try renting them beforehand. Games can be expensive and are often non-returnable, so you will want to purchase one that your child wants. Video game rentals help you get a good feel for the game, without costing you too much for trial and error.

Drink enough water during long video game sessions?don?t get dehydrated. Video games are a lot of fun, but you may become so interested in the game that you don?t take care of yourself. Dehydration can be a major health risk, so be sure you stay properly hydrated while you play your video games.

Games that are difficult are very challenging, and you should not become frustrated with them. Try playing again later, once you are more relaxed and perhaps can look at the problem you have to resolved in a different way. The objective of any game is having fun, so remember to relax!

You can have a lot of fun by playing some older classic games like flv to mov mac. Another advantage of this is that you will save a lot of money if you are able to find the game. Some of them can be bought for practically nothing online.

Stop and stretch your muscles when you are playing video games 4 times an hour. You will tend to get repetitive motion injuries playing video games if you don?t stretch. Your muscles need to be properly stretched to avoid cramping and formation of blood clots. It?s the healthy thing to do.

Checking a game out from the library lets you try it before you spend your money on it. They usually have an assortment to try. Call your library or check their website to find out which video games they have.

You need to utilize the settings regarding parental control. Check to see if you can play the game online. If so, limit how much access your kids have to the Internet. Also, keep close tabs on their friend request and monitor their play.

If you are out of shape and want an easy way to get some exercise, consider purchasing a Wii console. The Wii works with your own body movements and has an array of games that incorporate fitness.

If you want to buy a hot new game, make sure you reserve it at the store in advance, rather than waiting for a general release date. Many games these days have what is called a ?pre-order bonus,? which is an item given to those who order the game early. For example, you might be awarded character options and features that are not available to those who purchase the game after the release date.

If you buy used games, you need an adequate disc-cleaning kit. You never know what sort of shape your game will be in when you do this. These kits can help you restore your games to working condition, even if they used to be really grungy. It is a good idea to look at several cleaning disc options. Many kits are available in stores today.

Always use a high grade video connector when setting up your video game system. Consoles come with different cables to use to connect to the display of your choice. What cables are you to use for the best gaming experience? Whenever you can, use DVI or HDMI to get the highest grade of signal and clarity in your display. After them, the best are S-Video, Composite, and RCA. Coaxial connections are the most common connector; however, they are also the lowest quality. Only use it if you don?t have a choice.

Going online is a fun way to get to know other video gamers. Playing video games may be antisocial, so be sure to make time to socialize with other gamers online. Join an online forum so you can share tips and talk about your favorite games.

San Pedro Animal Hospital Offers low cost vaccinations to pets of ...

The issue of overpopulation of strays has been at the forefront of the news for the past several weeks here on the island. Now that the San Pedro Town Council is working with the Saga Humane Society in a weekly round up campaign of unattended dogs, which according to representatives has been very successful, this alone does not provided a solution to the problem. In an effort to encourage responsible and affordable pet care, the San Pedro Animal Hospital (SPAH) has come onboard, now offering low cost vaccinations.
The SPAH has committed to assist as well as provide for healthier pets on the island. Weekly the SPAH does a round up along with Town Council officials, and offer a one per week spay or neuter free of cost. This is done to curb the propagation, and eventual overpopulation of pets. This week, they are offering a different service to pet owners; vaccinations at an extremely low cost. On Friday between the hours of 9AM and 5PM all pet owners on the island can get their pets vaccinated at a whopping 75% Discount.
Dr. Lourie Droke, DVM spoke of their efforts; ?Here at the San Pedro Animal Hospital we are offering our low cost vaccine clinic on Friday August 31st. We want anyone who wants to, to bring their puppies and get them updated on their vaccines.? Dr. Droke will be offering rabies and the Distemper and Parvo Vaccines (DHLPP). These vaccines ordinarily go for $40 each, however during this one day they may be had at $10 each.
What do you need to do to get your pet vaccinated? Simply bring your pet and answer a couple of questions and get him/her vaccinated. ?To acquire services, we need to know the age of your dog, and we?ll get your name and phone number to put them in our computer system with basic information like address, age of your dog, sex, whether it?s spayed or neutered and that?s pretty much it.?
According to Dr. Droke these vaccines are extremely important to secure a healthy pet. ?While you can get only the rabies, we do recommend that you get both. The DHLPP is what protects your dog from five different diseases. So, needless to say it is extremely important. It?s not that common that these diseases are seen, but when they are seen the pets die from them. I see it several times a year someone loses their pet to one of these diseases due to not being vaccinated. The risk is there and the more pets are vaccinated, the less likely it is that we?re going to be seeing this disease.?
The vaccination is a joint effort with the San Pedro Town Council. ?I?d like to add that we are offering some services to the town council to help with the dog population problem. This vaccination program was developed with the help of the mayor, and we are also working with the town council to try to continue to offer spays and neuters, once a week. We?ll be picking up dogs once a week in low income areas to spay/ neuter. As such, we are also helping SAGA by picking up strays in those various neighborhoods we visit to and handing over those pets to them ? so please people, keep your dogs at home.?

Isaac nears New Orleans, floods rural La. levee

NEW ORLEANS (AP) ? Hurricane Isaac pushed water over a rural levee to flood some homes, knocked out power and immersed beach-front roads in Louisiana and Mississippi early Wednesday as it began a drenching slog inland from the Gulf of Mexico with a newly fortified New Orleans in its path.

Wind gusts of more than 60 miles per hour and sheets of rain pelted New Orleans, where people braced themselves for the storm behind levees that were strengthened after the much stronger Hurricane Katrina hit seven years ago to the day.

Isaac's dangerous storm surges and flooding threats from heavy rain were expected to last all day and into the night as it crawls over Louisiana, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami warned.

Water driven by the large and powerful storm pushed over the top of an 18-mile stretch of one levee in Plaquemines Parish south of New Orleans, flooding some homes in a thinly populated area. The levee is one of many across the low-lying coastal zone and not part of New Orleans' defenses.

As the rain continued and winds pushed across the Gulf Coast, it remained far too soon to determine the full extent of the damage.

Authorities in Plaquemines Parish believe some people may be trapped but were not sure how many may have remained despite an earlier evacuation order. Rescuers were waiting for the strong winds to die down later in the day before moving out to search.

"We did have two parish police officers that were stuck in a car there. We just found out they were rescued and are safe," said emergency management spokeswoman Caitlin Campbell. Two other parish workers in a boat rescued them.

Isaac was packing 80 mph winds, making it a Category 1 hurricane. It came ashore at 7:45 p.m. EDT Tuesday near the mouth of the Mississippi River, driving a wall of water nearly 11 feet high and soaking a neck of land that stretches into the Gulf.

The storm stalled for several hours before resuming a slow trek inland, and forecasters said that was in keeping with the its erratic history. The slow motion over land means Isaac could be a major soaker, dumping up to 20 inches of rain in some areas, and every storm is different, said Ken Graham, chief meteorologist at the National Weather Service office in Slidell, La.

"It's totally up to the storm," he said.

Isaac's winds and sheets of rain whipped New Orleans, where forecasters said the city's skyscrapers could feel gusts up to 100 mph. The weather service said more than 9 inches of rain had fallen in New Orleans in the 24 hours up to 7 a.m..

Power was knocked out to 482,000 customers across southern Louisiana, about 157,000 of them in New Orleans, utility Entergy said.

In Mississippi, the main highway that runs along the Gulf, U.S. 90, was closed in sections by storm surge flooding. At one spot in Biloxi, a foot of water covered the in-town highway for a couple of blocks and it looked like more was coming in. High tide around 9:30 a.m. was likely to bring up more water.

In Pass Christian, a Mississippi coastal community wiped out by hurricanes Camille and Katrina, Mayor Chipper McDermott was optimistic Isaac would not deal a heavy blow.

"It's not too bad, but the whole coast is going to be a mess," he said early Wednesday.

McDermott stood on the porch of the $6 million municipal complex built after Katrina, with walls of 1-foot-thick concrete to withstand hurricane winds. As he looked out toward the Gulf of Mexico, pieces of a structure that had stood atop the city's fishing pier washed across the parking lot.

The state transportation department said Mississippi Highway 43 and Mississippi Highway 604, both in Hancock County, were not passable because of storm surge driven inland.

In largely abandoned Plaquemines Parish, Campbell said an 18-mile stretch along the thinly populated east bank was being overtopped by surge. The levee had not broken.

Campbell said officials believe some people may be trapped in their homes by water from the overtopped levee but were not sure how many might still be in the area. Strong wind was hampering efforts of rescuers to get into parts of the area.

She said officials expected the water to recede to the Gulf as wind direction changes with the storm's movement..

Tens of thousands of people had been told ahead of Isaac to leave low-lying areas of Mississippi and Louisiana, including 700 patients of Louisiana nursing homes. Mississippi shut down the state's 12 shorefront casinos.

The hurricane promised to lend even more solemnity to commemoration ceremonies Wednesday for Katrina's 1,800 dead in Louisiana and Mississippi, including the tolling of the bells at St. Louis Cathedral overlooking New Orleans' Jackson Square.

The storm drew intense scrutiny because of its timing __ coinciding with Katrina and the first major speeches of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Fla., already delayed and tempered by the storm.

Isaac promises to test a New Orleans levee system bolstered by $14 billion in federal repairs and improvements after the catastrophic failures during Katrina. But in a city that has already weathered Hurricane Gustav in 2008, many had faith.

"I feel safe," said Pamela Young, who was riding out the storm in the Lower 9th Ward with her dog Princess in a new, two-story home built to replace the one destroyed by Katrina.

"If the wind isn't too rough, I can stay right here," she said, tapping on her wooden living room coffee table. "If the water comes up, I can go upstairs."

Isaac posed political challenges with echoes of those that followed Katrina, a reminder of how the storm seven years ago became a symbol of government ignorance and ineptitude.

President Barack Obama sought to demonstrate his ability to guide the nation through a natural disaster and Republicans reassured residents they were prepared Tuesday as they formally nominated the former Massachusetts governor as the Republican Party's presidential candidate.

There was already simmering political fallout from the storm. Louisiana's Republican Gov. Bobby Jindal, who canceled his trip to the convention in Tampa, said the Obama administration's disaster declaration fell short of the federal help he had requested. Jindal said he wanted a promise from the federal government to be reimbursed for storm preparation costs.

FEMA Administrator Craig Fugate said such requests would be addressed after the storm.

Obama promised that Americans will help each other recover, "no matter what this storm brings."

"When disaster strikes, we're not Democrats or Republicans first, we are Americans first," Obama said at a campaign rally at Iowa State University. "We're one family. We help our neighbors in need."

Along the Gulf coast east of New Orleans, veterans of past hurricanes made sure to take precautions.

Bonnie Chortler, 54, of Waveland, Miss., lost her home during Hurricane Katrina. After hearing forecasts that Isaac could get stronger and stall, she decided to evacuate to her father's home in Red Level, Ala.

"A slow storm can cause a lot more havoc, a lot more long-term power outage, 'cause it can knock down just virtually everything if it just hovers forever," she said.

Those concerns were reinforced by local officials, who imposed curfews in three Mississippi counties.

"This storm is big and it's tightening up and it sat out there for 12 hours south of us and it's pushing that wave action in and there's nowhere for that water to go until it dissipates," said Harrison County Emergency Operations Director Rupert Lacy.

Astronomers find first multi-planet system around a binary star

ScienceDaily (Aug. 28, 2012) ? NASA's Kepler mission has found the first multi-planet solar system orbiting a binary star, characterized in large part by University of Texas at Austin astronomers using two telescopes at the university's McDonald Observatory in West Texas. The finding, which proves that whole planetary systems can form in a disk around a binary star, is published in the August 28 issue of the journal Science.

"It's Tatooine, right?" said McDonald Observatory astronomer Michael Endl. "But this was not shown in Star Wars," he said, referring to the periodic changes in the amount of daylight falling on a planet with two suns. Measurements of the star's orbits showed that daylight on the planets would vary by a large margin over the 7.4-Earth-day period as the two stars completed their mutual orbits, each moving closer to, then farther from, the planets (which are themselves moving).

The binary star in question is called Kepler-47. The primary star is about the same mass as the Sun, and its companion is an M-dwarf star one-third its size. The inner planet is three times the size of Earth and orbits the binary star every 49.5 days, while the outer planet is 4.6 times the size of Earth with an orbit of 303.2 days.

The outer planet is the first planet found to orbit a binary star within the "habitable zone," where liquid water could exist and thus create a home for life. However, the planet's size (about the same as Uranus) means that it is an icy giant, and not an abode for life. It's a tantalizing taste of discoveries waiting to be made.

The combination of observations from the NASA mission and McDonald Observatory allowed astronomers to understand the characteristics of Kepler-47's two stars and two planets.

The Kepler mission looks for minute dips in the amount of light coming from a star that might indicate a planet is passing in front of it, an event called a "transit." The space telescope is also adept at identifying eclipsing binary stars, in which two stars pass in front of each other as they orbit each other. In the case of Kepler-47, they found both stellar eclipses and planet transits in one system.

So Kepler astronomers Jerome Orosz (lead author on the study) and William Welsh of San Diego State University flagged the Kepler-47 system as worthy of follow up from the ground. They asked the McDonald Observatory Kepler team to work with them.

Endl studied the binary star with the 9.2-meter Hobby-Eberly Telescope (HET, one of the world's largest telescopes), as well as the 2.7-meter Harlan J. Smith Telescope at McDonald.

"The challenging thing is that this is a very faint star," Endl said, "about 6,000 times dimmer than can be seen with the naked eye."

He was taking spectra of the system -- looking for characteristics in its light to indicate the motions of the primary star. (The secondary star is too faint to measure.) The McDonald observations enabled astronomers to calculate the mass of the primary star.

These values, along with the Kepler eclipse and transit timings, were plugged into a model that calculated the relative sizes of all the bodies involved, Endl said.

The Kepler team at McDonald Observatory also includes Bill Cochran (a co-Investigator of the Kepler mission), research scientist Phillip MacQueen, graduate students Paul Robertson and Eric Brugamyer, and recent graduate Caroline Caldwell.

"This is the type of research where McDonald Observatory really excels," Cochran said. "We have excellent scientific instruments on our telescopes, and the queue-scheduled operation of the HET allows us to obtain spectra at the optimal times when they will give us the best information about the stars."

Keeping the Family Tree

Q:

I have a MacBook Pro and an old Dell that is dying. I?m very much into genealogy and I?ve used Family Tree Maker for 15 years and love the 2005 version. If I were to install Boot Camp on my Mac would I be able to run the 2005 version?

A:

If a program will run on a Windows PC, it almost certainly will run on a Mac running Boot Camp with Windows installed. Boot Camp essentially turns the Mac into a Windows PC, with no Mac operating system running. Windows takes over the hardware.

The only problem might be if the version of Family Tree Maker you want to use won?t run on Windows 7, because Boot Camp requires a fresh, boxed copy of Windows and it may be difficult for you to find and buy an older version than Windows 7.

Q:

I have several two- to three-year-old laptops that I would like to donate. Is there a quick and easy way to wipe the hard drives clean without having to painstakingly delete/uninstall info/programs?

A:

Yes. It?s generally called a ?file wiper? program and it deletes all or some of the files on a PC in a way that makes it impossible for even a typical skilled technician to recover your files. I haven?t reviewed any for years, so I can?t recommend one. But you can find one by searching for ?file wipers.?

Q:

In your review last week of the Zoom video conferencing service, you only briefly mentioned Google+ Hangouts, which I find works well. Doesn?t Hangout have some features Zoom lacks and why didn?t you do a detailed comparison?

A:

The column wasn?t meant to be a comparison of multiple video conferencing services. It was a review focused on a new one I found to have excellent quality and to allow more simultaneous participants?15?than any other free service I?ve seen, including Hangout, which allows for 10 participants.

I also found it attractive that it is a stand-alone service, not part of a social network or email service, as Hangout is, because there are many people who prefer not to join yet another network.

But I did note that Hangout ?works well? and, as you note, Google?s service does have some features Zoom lacks, like access to Google Docs and the ability to broadcast your video chat to nonparticipants.

Egypt says Syria's "oppressive regime" must go

DUBAI/AMMAN (Reuters) - Egypt called on Thursday for intervention to halt bloodshed in Syria, telling a meeting of 120 nations it was their duty to stand against the "oppressive regime" of Bashar al-Assad, prompting a Syrian walkout.

President Mohamed Mursi, elected two months ago after a popular uprising toppled Egypt's long-standing leader Hosni Mubarak, said Assad had lost legitimacy in his fight to crush a 17-month-old revolt in which 20,000 people have been killed.

Mursi's scathing speech to a summit of non-aligned leaders, hosted by Assad's Shi'ite ally Iran, prompted Syria's foreign minister to accuse the moderate Sunni Islamist leader of inciting further bloodshed in Syria.

The political broadside against the Syrian president came as rebels said they shot down a fighter plane in northern Syria, where his air force has been bombarding opposition-held towns in a fierce counter-offensive against insurgents.

It was the latest strike by Assad's foes on the air power he has increasingly relied on to crush the uprising. Rebels said this week they attacked a northern military air base and shot down a helicopter that was bombarding a district of Damascus.

"The bloodshed in Syria is our responsibility on all our shoulders and we have to know that the bloodshed cannot stop without effective interference from all of us," Mursi said.

"We all have to announce our full solidarity with the struggle of those seeking freedom and justice in Syria, and translate this sympathy into a clear political vision that supports a peaceful transition to a democratic system of rule that reflects the demands of the Syrian people for freedom."

His comments prompted Syria's Foreign Minister Walid al-Moualem to storm out of the meeting, complaining that Mursi was inciting fighters to "continue shedding Syrian blood", Syrian state television said.

ASSAD SAYS NEEDS TIME

Assad, in his first television interview since rebels took their fight into the heart of Damascus and the country's biggest city, Aleppo, said on Wednesday his fight to put down the uprising was going well but needed more time.

"Everyone wants this battle to be completed in days or weeks but this isn't reasonable, because we are in the middle of a regional and international struggle and it needs time to be resolved," he said.

Mainly peaceful protests were met with force by Assad's military, and the uprising has degenerated into a civil war with sectarian overtones and regional dimensions. The mainly Sunni Muslim rebels are backed by regional Sunni powers, particularly Gulf Arab states and Turkey.

Assad, whose Alawite community is an offshoot of Shi'ite Islam, has support from Iran, a rival of Gulf Arab states and Western powers. Lebanon's Shi'ite militia Hezbollah has also shown solidarity with the Syrian president.

The role of regional powers has assumed greater significance because of deadlock at U.N. Security Council, where diplomatic stalemate has marginalized the major powers.

U.S., Russian and Chinese ministers are not expected to attend Thursday's U.N. Security Council meeting on Syria, underlining the fact that both Assad's critics and backers on the council see little prospect of it taking any action.

"We wanted a resolution on humanitarian issues, but we faced a double refusal," said a French diplomat, whose country will chair the meeting in New York.

"The United States and Britain believe we have reached the end of what can be achieved at the Security Council, and Moscow and Beijing said that such a resolution would have been biased."

Nearly a year and a half after the uprising erupted, Assad's political foes are equally divided.

A member of the Syrian National Council, which once hoped to win international endorsement as the country's leadership-in-waiting, resigned this week complaining it was not doing enough to back the revolt and must be replaced by a new political authority.

"My sense was that the SNC was not up to facing the increasing challenges on the ground," Basma Kodmani, the latest council member to break from the SNC, told Reuters.

PLANE "SHOT DOWN"

The Syrian Martyrs Brigade said on Thursday it brought down a plane near the town of al-Thayabiya. Video footage on Al Arabiya television showed what appeared to be smoke in the sky and a person parachuting down. An army helicopter hovered over the area, apparently in search of the pilot.

"The brigade has started targeting the regime's air assets, including military airports," a member of the group said from Idlib, declining to give further details.

As well as targeting rebels, Assad's jets and artillery have also struck at least 10 bakeries in Aleppo province in the last three weeks, killing dozens of people as they waited in line to buy bread, the U.S.-based Human Rights Watch said.

It said the attacks were either deliberate or done without care to avoid the hundreds of civilians forced to queue outside a dwindling number of bakeries in Syria's biggest city, a front line in the civil war.

One attack two weeks ago killed around 60 people and wounded more than 70, it said.

The fighting around Aleppo, Damascus and the southern province of Deraa, where protests against Assad first erupted in March 2011, has prompted waves of refugees to flood into neighboring Turkey and Jordan.

Turkey urged the United Nations to protect displaced Syrians inside their own country, to take the pressure off its crowded refugee camps, and France said it was studying the issue of buffer zones in Syria, an idea Assad dismissed as unrealistic.

Prince Harry: Dumped By Cressida Bonas Over Nude Pic Scandal!

Prince Harry has reportedly been dumped by his new girlfriend Cressida Bonas after she was devastated by his naked hotel room antics in Las Vegas.

Bonas has told friends the pictures of Prince Harry nude and cavorting with women in Sin City made her realize she has no future with the royal.

Cressida, daughter of 1960s cover girl Lady Mary-Gaye Curzon, began dating him earlier this summer and even went on vacation with him.

Before Harry went to the U.S. for military training this summer, Cressida felt convinced she had a future with William's younger brother. No longer.

Harry the PrinceCressida Bonas Photo

“Harry has blown it,” a friend of hers said today. “Cressida saw a future with Harry but then he went and embarrassed her like he did in Vegas."

“He clearly isn’t as serious about her as he had claimed to be and it’s highly embarrassing. He’s ruined his chances now. She’s humiliated.”

As a result, she's severed all ties to him, The Sun reports.

Cressida Bonas' decision to send Harry packing comes as he braces himself for some serious reprimanding from both the army and his family.

It may not be over, either. One of the women who saw Prince Harry naked is preparing to go on TV in America within the “next few days”.

She’s even vowed to take a lie-detector test should anyone question her version of events and has hired a PR “fixer” for her media tour.

Sounds like a real classy babe.
