Trail Blazers' search for head coach to begin at Las Vegas Summer League

Trail Blazers general manager Neil Olshey said he will begin interviewing head coach candidates later this week at the Las Vegas Summer League.

?We have vetted all the candidates, and we have our list,?? Olshey said. "I will have some clarity at the end of the week in terms of names that will be on the interview list. Right now, I plan on conducting interviews in Vegas. It?s the atmosphere most conducive to a search. we can see almost all the guys, who are on staffs, so we can bang through it pretty quickly and efficiently.??

The Las Vegas Summer League features 23 NBA teams and starts Friday; eight NBA teams are playing in the Orlando Summer League, which started Monday.

Although Olshey did not offer names, if he goes the route of choosing an assistant, he is expected to consider Indiana's Brian Shaw, Golden State's Michael Malone, Miami's David Fizdale, Oklahoma City's Rex Kalamian, San Antonio's Mike Budenholzer and Memphis' Dave Joerger. Blazers assistant Kaleb Canales, who went 8-15 as interim coach last season after Nate McMillan was fired, is also expected to be a candidate. Canales will coach the Blazers' Summer League entrant, with help from Dan Dickau and Hersey Hawkins.

Other available coaches with head coaching experience include Mike D'Antoni (Phoenix, New York), Jerry Sloan (Utah), Jeff Van Gundy (New York, Houston) and Mike Dunleavy (Portland, Lakers, Clippers, Milwaukee).
?
Shaw might be a front runner because of his background. Like the Blazers? top draft pick, point guard Damian Lillard, Shaw is an Oakland native. And like Lillard, Shaw was an NBA point guard, having played 14 seasons mostly as a reserve for seven different teams, including Portland. He also won three NBA titles with the Lakers.

The Blazers? other lottery pick, center Meyers Leonard, lost his father when he was six as the result of a bicycle accident. In 1993, when Shaw was in the NBA, he lost his parents and sister in a car accident.

Malone, on the other hand, was voted this winter by NBA general managers as the top assistant in the league, getting nearly twice as many votes as Shaw, who finished second. Malone, whose father Brendan was an NBA head coach in Toronto and an interim coach in Cleveland, has been an NBA assistant for 11 seasons. Malone spent four seasons on the Knicks? bench, five in Cleveland, one in New Orleans and last season in Golden State. When he was with Cleveland, the Cavaliers advanced to the NBA Finals, and head coach Mike Brown often leaned on Malone to diagram plays during timeouts.

Olshey has waited to start the coaching search because he wanted to know what his team looked like before choosing a coach and playing style. He said this week?s free agent developments could alter his viewpoint, but probably won?t.

?Based on the candidates I don?t think it will,?? Olshey said. ?Clearly as our roster composition takes on more clarity you might have guys more interested in coaching a veteran oriented team ... and you may have guys more comfortable coming in with a more younger group that they can grow and develop under their tutelage.??

One outside factor that could play a role in the Blazers' search is Orlando's quest to find a replacement for the fired Stan Van Gundy. Orlando has already started its interview process and is believed to have reached out to Shaw, Malone, San Antonio assistant Jacque Vaughn, Lakers assistant Quin Snyder and former NBA guards Lindsey Hunter and Jeff Hornacek.
