Customized iPad App for British Prime Minister

Bangalore: British Prime Minister, David Cameron is going to get a personalized App for his iPad to stay ahead and updated in Government affairs. This App will be a one-stop store for all the happening related to country?s facts, issues and performance.? There is also a rumor that this App will be available to the public after a while.

The London Times and The Telegraph has stated that ?Mr Cameron will be able to see at a glance the latest NHS waiting-list figures, crime statistics, unemployment numbers and myriad other data which, in the short term, could provide quite grim reading?. And ?The programmers inside Cabinet Office are working on the App for the Prime Minister that will bring together the latest information from across government with his favorite new sources?.

The intended App is said to have ?real time? news from Google, Twitter and other news sources. This implies that the App will rely on the open data stream which already exists on internet. The secrecy still prevails whether this will be a real App or just another highly protected webpage exclusively for British Prime Minister.

Reports say that the App is going to the launched in March 2012. We suppose this long delay is due to the long security testing process it has to pass through, as the App may include confidential government data. ?Is India Government planning something like this which is using the high end technology of the gadget and App world to channelize government information????

Another Report Shows Google+ With 60M+ Users And Growing? But Active User Count Still Unknown

Screen Shot 2011-12-27 at 5.13.15 PMGoogle+ now has more than 62 million users, according to Paul Allen, Ancestry.com founder and unofficial traffic analyst for Google's social network. That's not 62 million active users, though -- a point that everyone covering these numbers seems to have missed. It's just the number of total users. And specifically, it's the number of new surnames that Allen's team has tracked being created on the service. Because Google has aggressively integrated G+ into many other properties, including its top navigation bar and the OneBox, one would expect a certain baseline amount of sign-ups from among the hundreds of millions of people using other Google products. The real question is how many people are returning after creating their accounts, which Allen doesn't try to answer.

Giant tiger prawn invades Gulf of Mexico

The giant tiger prawn is more than just a jumbo shrimp. It's a huge, hungry and highly invasive species that could pose a jumbo problem for the already embattled Gulf of Mexico ecosystem. And according to wildlife officials along the U.S. Gulf Coast, it had a very big year in 2011.

What's this?
Formally known as Penaeus monodon, the tiger prawn is native to the Indian and Pacific oceans from East Africa to Australia. It has a more predatory lifestyle than many similar species, often hiding in sand during the day and hunting at night. It also has a ravenous appetite, growing up to 14 inches long and weighing up to 23 ounces. Small numbers have appeared along the U.S. Gulf and Atlantic coasts since 2006, occasionally turning up in the Carolinas, Georgia, Florida and Alabama. Louisiana reports about 25 to 30 per year.

?

But according to Houma Today in Terrebonne Parish, La., there were nearly 100 reports of tiger prawns this fall in Louisiana alone, with one dock counting 100 individuals. Texas' first confirmed specimen was also caught this June, the Houston Chronicle reports, followed soon after by four more. And the U.S. Geological Survey reported eight tiger prawns this year in Mississippi, 11 in Florida and 18 in Alabama ? compared with zero, two and zero respectively for those states in 2010. The USGS listed 42 such reports nationwide in 2009, and just 18 in 2008.

?

While no one is sure what kind of ecological impact tiger prawns could have in the Gulf, their appetite isn't the only concern. The species is also a known carrier of at least 16 different viruses, including white spot, yellowhead and others that can be deadly to crustaceans. Taken together, these dangers could threaten not only the Gulf's native brown and white shrimp, but also various species of crabs and oysters.

?

"It has the potential to be real ugly," Leslie Hartman, a biologist with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department, tells the Houston Chronicle. "But we just do not know." Fellow biologist Marty Bourgeois of Louisiana's Department of Wildlife and Fisheries echoes that sentiment. "There's a certain unknown about what ecological impacts that something non-indigenous like this can have on the local environment," he tells Houma Today. "But it is somewhat alarming that these reports have suddenly ramped up."

?

In addition to its vast native habitat, the tiger prawn is also one of the most widely cultivated species of shrimp or prawn on Earth, according to the U.N. Food and Agriculture Organization (see chart below). The top producers are mainly in Asia, but it's farmed around the world. Scientists aren't sure where the Gulf invaders came from, although a leading theory suggests they escaped from aquaculture facilities.

?

Global aquaculture production of Penaeus monodon, 1950-2010

?

A South Carolina farm accidentially released a cluster of tiger prawns in 1988, the Associated Press notes, and they may have found a way to spread without detection until now. That's not uncommon with invasive species, which often lie low for generations before exploding across their new habitat. Asian carp likely escaped from Arkansas fish farms in the 1970s, for example, but didn't become a regional menace until years afterward (and scientists now fear a similar pattern in the Great Lakes).

?

A migration from South Carolina would still be challenging, though, and there are other possibilities. Tiger prawns could have fled U.S. aquaculture farms during hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005, for instance, or from operations in the Caribbean Sea and Central America during more recent storms. Scientists plan to conduct genetic tests on the newly caught prawns to determine their origin, the Chronicle reports, but at least 60 specimens will be needed to ensure an accurate analysis.

?

The case of loose tiger prawns also casts a broader spotlight on Gulf Coast aquaculture, which the Obama administration authorized in 2009 despite criticism from environmental and fishing groups. Diseases like white spot naturally exist at low levels in the wild, but ? much like at industrial cattle, poultry or hog farms ? they can grow more virulent when their hosts are densely packed together.

?

And while U.S. regulations are generally stricter for farming non-native species, it's hard to completely prevent escapes from happening ? especially during hurricanes or heavy floods. Even if tiger prawns don't devastate native shrimp with disease, they still eat many of the same food sources, putting them in direct competition. They're also known to eat some smaller crustaceans.

?

It's too soon to know the scope of the problem, but a reproducing population of tiger prawn in the Gulf could easily be disastrous. The region is already home to a menagerie of invasive species ? from tilapia and lionfish to zebra mussels and nutria ? and parts of it remain devastated by the 2010 BP oil spill. An alien predator as big and prolific as the tiger prawn is the last thing such a fragile ecosystem needs.

?

Still, there may be a silver lining ? for humans, at least. Campaigns promoting invasive species as cuisine have gained steam in recent years, whether it's lionfish in Miami or Asian carp in Memphis, and there's a reason tiger prawn are so widely cultivated. The big, meaty crustaceans command an even higher market price than native brown shrimp, the Chronicle points out, raising the possibility that they too could become a profitable Gulf Coast commodity.

?

"It could be another crop," Hartman explains, "but at the expense of our native crop."

Windows Phone roadmap leaked, updates detailed

Windows Phone RoadmapCurious about where Microsoft is taking its latest mobile operating system the following year? It looks like we have the answer. The folks over at WMPoweruser recently got their hands on what is claimed to be a leaked roadmap for Windows Phone and it does show us some interesting details.

According to the alleged roadmap, we?ll be seeing Windows Phone Tango only in Q2 of 2012. And judging by the description of the update ? Windows Phone Tango is going to be the update that introduces budget Windows Phone devices to the market. It wasn?t mentioned what Microsoft means by ?products with the best prices? ? is Microsoft going to remove features from the operating system to make it cheaper? Or will it only be available to low-end devices? We?ll just have to wait and see.

Q4 of 2012 ? the Apollo update is going to be what everybody is looking forward to. Its arrival should increase the overall number of Windows Phone device, introduce ?Competitive Superphones? and address the needs of business users. According to a Tweet from the Verge?s Tom Warren, the leaked roadmap is reported to be ?very old?, so the dates could possibly be wrong ? assuming the leaked roadmap was accurate in the first place.

Well, this means that consumers will have to hold out for quite a while longer if they?d like to get their hands on the Windows Phone ?Superphones? ? we?ll just wait and see what happens in 2012.

Beidou Satellite System: China Begins Trial Operations Of New Global Positioning System

BEIJING (Reuters) - China took a further step on Tuesday toward ending its dependence on U.S. satellites to provide navigation and positioning services with the start of trial operations of its homegrown Beidou system.

China started a drive to end its reliance on the U.S. global positioning system in 2000, when it sent an experimental pair of positioning satellites into orbit.

Ran Chengqi, spokesman for the new system, told reporters that Beidou, or "Big Dipper," would cover most parts of the Asia Pacific by next year and then the world by 2020.

China has already launched 10 satellites to support Beidou and would launch another six next year, he said.

State media have said the system will eventually comprise 35 satellites, which will be used for a variety of sectors including fisheries, meteorology and telecommunications.

China has ambitious plans for space, including a space station and a manned trip to the moon.

While China has vowed never to militarize space, experts say it is ramping up the military use of space with new satellites.

The successful missile "kill" of an old satellite in early 2007 represented a new level of ability for the Chinese military, and last year China successfully tested emerging technology aimed at destroying missiles in mid-air.

California Releases Tax Data

FTBThe California Franchise Tax Board has released its 2010 Annual Report, with statistical appendix tables in five categories:

The FTB also has released 2011 California Income Tax Expenditures Report.

The FTB first published the California Income Tax Expenditures Report in 2003. The report describes only tax expenditures found in California corporation tax and California personal income tax laws. We begin by discussing the concept of tax expenditures and cover many definitional and policy issues. We then present analyses of current tax expenditures within the California income tax system.

We organize the tax expenditures within the report in four categories: Credits, Deductions, Elections, and Exclusions, then we list the items alphabetically within each category.

Figures 1, 2, and 3 summarize the costs and policy goals of the expenditure items discussed in this report. Figures 1 and 2 list the expenditure items. Figure 1 lists items that conform to federal income tax laws. Figure 2 lists items that do not conform to federal income tax laws. Each figure is ranked according to the expenditure?s impact on state revenue. The figures include the cost of the expenditure and the page number where additional information about the expenditure is located. Figure 3 lists tax expenditures by policy goal. Figure 4 presents the usage of carryover credits from expired tax expenditures.

Troops hit protesters marching into Yemen capital

SANAA, Yemen (AP) - Troops commanded by relatives of Yemen's outgoing president attacked a crowd of more than 100,000 protesters peacefully marching into the capital Saturday, killing at least nine and driving the president to promise to leave the country.

Yielding to pressure to defuse the country's turmoil, president Ali Abdullah Saleh said Saturday he would leave for the United States after forces overseen by his son and nephew opened fire on the protesters.

They had marched for four days and 200 miles on foot to pressure the government not to give Saleh immunity from prosecution, in the first march of its kind in the impoverished nation that is home to a dangerous al-Qaida offshoot. After protesters arrived at the southern entrances to the capital, forces of the elite Republican Guard fired on them with automatic weapons, tear gas and water cannons, sparking hours of clashes.

The violence illustrated the confusion in Yemen caused by the slow-motion exit of Saleh from power after 33 years of rule.

After entrenching for months against massive protests across the country demanding his ouster, the president signed a deal in late November handing over his powers to the vice president and committing to leave office in return for immunity.

But Saleh retains his title and remains in the presidential palace, lauded as "his excellency the president" by state media controlled by his supporters.

Opponents say he has continued to wield influence through his relatives and loyalists who still hold powerful positions, undermining Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi. That has raised fears that Saleh was looking for a way to continue to rule, even as a national unity government prepares for presidential elections set for February.

The Republican Guard forces, led by Saleh's son Ahmed, and Central Security troops, led by his nephew, have defied orders from Hadi that they pull back from positions in the streets of the capital, even up to a Saturday deadline.

Saleh had been expected to leave Yemen soon after he signed the U.S.- and Saudi-backed accord, ostensibly to undergo treatment for wounds suffered in an assassination attempt in June. But officials say he has stalled on leaving.

Hours after the fighting erupted in Sanaa, Saleh told reporters at his palace that he would leave "in the coming days" for the U.S.

"Not for treatment, but to get out of sight and the media to calm the atmosphere for the unity government to hold the presidential election," he said.

He said he would eventually return and pursue "political work as an opposition figure."

Government officials said ambassadors from the five permanent members of the U.N. Security Council had been in contact with Saleh in the past week to pressure him to leave. The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the press.

There was no immediate confirmation from American officials that Saleh would come to the U.S., though Yemeni officials said he had received a visa.

The protesters, who have been massing by the millions around the country since February, oppose an accord for Saleh's exit because it would grant him immunity and because it keeps many of his regime figures in place.

Saturday's "March of Life" demanded Saleh be put on trial for the killings of protesters during his crackdown on the uprising. The crowds marched from Taiz, a city that has been a major opposition center 170 miles (270 kilometers) to the south of Sanaa.

The marchers Saturday were trying to pass down a main avenue where the presidential palace is located when they were met by Republican Guard and Central Security forces, backed by tanks. Troops fired on the crowd, who responded by throwing stones.

The fighting stopped after several hours when the loyalist forces allowed the protesters to continue their march into Sanaa. Amid the clashes, Hadi issued orders for the troops to step aside, but government officials said they only obeyed after international ambassadors contacted Saleh's son Ahmed.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the behind-the-scenes efforts.

At least eight protesters, including a woman, were killed and more than 200 injured, including 61 wounded by gunfire, according to two doctors at a protesters' field hospital, Mohammed el-Qoutbi and Sadeq el-Shogaa.

In all, at least 500,000 protesters had joined the march by the time it reached Change Square, according to activists. A smaller group broke away and marched on the presidential palace, where troops opened fire on them, killing a ninth protester and wounding four more, activist Abdel-Karim el-Khaywani said.

The violence sparked Prime Minister Mohammed Basindwa to ask a committee to investigate.

"The prime minister called on the Defense and Interior ministers to create an investigative committee into what happened and how protesters were killed," said Information Minister Ali el-Emrani. "The results of the investigation will be shown to the prime minister for the correct course of action."

A human rights organization appeared to lay responsibility on Saleh and the new unity government.

"The shooting of peaceful demonstrators by forces under the control of President Saleh and his top commanders is further proof that promises of immunity encourage rather than deter illegal attacks," Letta Tayler, Human Rights Watch Yemen researcher, said in a statement Saturday.

"Systematic or widespread unlawful killings, carried out as a state policy, are likely to be crimes against humanity," she added.

Even if Saleh carries out his promise to leave, his loyalists remain in place. The unity government is split between opposition parties and Saleh's Congress Party, which holds the powerful defense, oil and foreign affairs ministries. A military committee that Hadi heads to manage military affairs also includes the Congress Party.

There is also confusion over when Saleh is supposed to formally leave as president.

According to the deal signed Nov. 23, the parliament was supposed to convene 29 days later to approve immunity for Saleh; on the next day, he would step down. But parliament has not formally taken up the issue. Some lawmakers say that the "mechanisms" for the deal give them until the February presidential election to grant immunity.

Parliament convened for the first time Saturday since March but did not discuss immunity. Instead it discussed the program of the national unity government, headed by Basindwa, a veteran independent politician. The body can not take action by majority vote; it must reach consensus between Congress Party lawmakers and the opposition.

In past weeks, Saleh loyalists have repeatedly worked counter to Hadi.

Foreign Minister Abu Bakr al-Qirbi, a veteran of Saleh's regime, rejected a U.N. request to send a human rights fact-finding team to Yemen, without consulting with Hadi. When he learned about the incident, Hadi gave his approval.

Last week, the Military Committee ordered the removal of the top military commander in Taiz for the killings of protesters there. But the governor of Taiz, a Saleh loyalist, did not carry out the order.

Green Jobs Debacle

The Green Energy debacle has washed down the proverbial drain another half billion dollars with no visible success or green jobs created or saved

Sifting through Congressional records is not my idea of fun. I wanted to find out for myself where half a billion-taxpayer dollars were spent with the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009, which was earmarked to fund employment and training programs for Americans.

The unemployment rate was abysmal yet the Employment Training Administration (ETA) received half a billion dollars in grants for research, labor exchange, and job training projects for careers in renewable energy industries and energy efficiency, the administration?s so-called ?Green Jobs? program. Where were the jobs?

The Department of Labor?s Office of Inspector General (OIG), an independent entity, was asked by Congress to audit this Green Jobs program. The Inspector General?s office was told to find out how ETA defined ?green jobs,? how ETA used the half billion dollars, how much training and placement workers received, and what was their job retention rate. The findings were a typical example of government waste of taxpayer dollars.

?Green jobs? were defined as ?jobs associated with products and services that use renewable energy resources, reduce pollution, and conserve natural resources. This is nothing new, since such jobs were defined in the Occupational Information Network and more recently in the Energy Policy Act of 2005 and the Green Jobs Act of 2007, long before the current presidency.

The half billion dollars were awarded as grants to 189 entities, mostly for training programs and $54.7 million for non-training programs. Program administration and technical assistance swallowed the remaining $9.9 million.

Twenty-five projects, mostly first time recipients of grants, prepared and placed workers for ?green jobs? such as hybrid/electric auto technicians, weatherization specialists (caulkers), and solar panel installers.

Thirty-eight grants were distributed to Pathways Out of Poverty projects ($147.7 million) for worker recruitment, job referral services, basic skills, work-readiness, occupational skills training, and supportive services to overcome barriers to employment. Non-profit agencies, community colleges, and State Workforce Agencies received the funds. I am translating this as another redistribution of wealth scheme to support the current administration?s goals.

Non-training programs squandered $54.7 million to disseminate ?green jobs? information through State Labor Markets, to help workers find jobs after training, equipment purchases, curriculum development, and hiring of additional staff.

The audit found that all the money had been allocated as of June 30, 2011. Only 33 percent of the grants were spent, the entire sum was already obligated to be spent in the future, but 73 percent of the training and non-training periods had already elapsed. The money was spent but only some training took place. So much for government efficiency and use of taxpayer dollars.

Forty-two percent of the recipients were trained. Twenty-seven percent had completed training. Only ten percent of participants entered employment and only TWO percent had retained employment for more than six months. This is a monumental waste of half a billion dollars. Even ETA acknowledged that grant recipients complained that the overall economic conditions were poor and green jobs had not materialized.

?ETA could not demonstrate that grantees were on target to meet grant outcomes nor was there a plan to ensure that they could.?

Elliot P. Lewis, Assistant Inspector General for Audit, testified to the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform on November 2, 2011 that OIG is ?concerned as to whether grantees will effectively use the funds and deliver targeted employment outcomes by the end of the grant periods.?

It is a false statement to say that there is high demand for ?green job-related skills.? The OIG audit recommended that ?ETA evaluate the Green Jobs program and obtain a current estimate of the funds each grantee will realistically spend given the current job market and the demand for green job-related skills.?

Unfortunately the taxpayers lost half a billion dollars because ETA had obligated all of its Recovery Act funds, ?and it expects that all funds will have been expended by September 30, 2013, as required by the Office of Management and Budget.?

The Green Energy debacle has washed down the proverbial drain another half billion dollars with no visible success or green jobs ?created or saved,? to use a favorite expression of this administration.

Deanna Barnert: Chandler Massey Is Ready to Play Gay in Daytime

Chandler Massey's Will is having a tough time since he spotted his mom doing the nasty with EJ again on Days of our Lives. It certainly isn't easy being Sami's son -- and it won't be any easier coming out as Sami's gay son. Keeping mum about the worst kept secret in daytime? Massey admits that wasn't easy either!

Rumor has it Will will come out by the time the ball drops on 2012, but Salem may actually have a bit more time than that to build to the reveals. One thing's for sure: While Massey still can't get too specific about the storyline, he's clearly enjoying the ride.

What can we expect from your big storyline?

It's not just my big story. It affects everybody. You can expect, obviously, Will to come out of the closet. I can say that much. (laughs) It's a story that everybody -- the actors, the writers -- is taking seriously. We're giving a ton of time and effort. It's going to unfold slowly, because we want to be as realistic as possible, because coming to terms with who you are and your sexuality is not something that happens overnight. It takes time. It's not one of those things where, "Oh, some other soaps are doing gay storylines, it's popular, it's on Glee, so we're just going to do it." It's a meaningful story that's very relevant today. You can expect some good stuff.

When Sonny was first brought into the fold, everyone assumed he was going to be the guy Will came out for. Is that how it goes down?

We didn't want to go the stereotypical, cheesy route. Just because two guys are homosexual and happen to be the only two homosexuals on-screen doesn't mean they're going to be like, "Oh yeah, let's get together!" It doesn't always happen like that. Another beautiful thing about this storyline is the platonic friendship between Will and Sonny. It's interesting and unique, and definitely enriches the storyline.

Is coming out going to be a difficult process for Will?

It's going to be very difficult. No one lives in a vacuum and if you go back through his family history, first of all, his mom's obviously very straight and had multiple male partners and his dad, too. He's grown up and sees "man being with woman." That's what someone like him would come to expect from himself, so when he doesn't feel like he thinks he should, it's going to cause some problems. Mostly, it's because of the people he cares about and loves. He's basically afraid of how they will react.

Did you have any concerns about playing this story?

Personally, I was thrilled when they told me back in February. Yes, I've known since February, but obviously I wasn't allowed to say anything. I'm honored to be part of this storyline, which is important and relevant today. It's a creative challenge to me, because I get to play something very different than who I am.

Are you saying you're normally a ladies' man and a player?

Yeah, exactly. (laughs) The reaction so far has been very positive. I'm sure there will be people who don't see eye to eye with everybody else, but it's a story that needs to be told and if they don't like it... um... they don't have to watch. They can fast forward through those parts, but it's not just a "Oh this guy is gay" story: It's about a real person going through a real emotional rollercoaster. It's incredibly well written. I can't wait for everyone to see what's coming.

Russian drilling rig sinks off Sakhalin, 51 missing (Reuters)

MOSCOW (Reuters) ? An oil drilling rig with 67 crew on board capsized and sank off the Russian Far East island of Sakhalin when it ran into a storm while being towed, and 51 of the crew were unaccounted for, Russian news agencies reported on Sunday.

Fourteen crew members were rescued alive from the 'Kolskaya' jack-up rig, operated by Russian exploration company Arktikmorneftegazrazvedka, two bodies were recovered and the rest of the crew were missing.

"According to reports from the scene of the rescue operation, the Kolskaya platform has sunk completely," the local head of the Emergencies Ministry, Taimuraz Kasayev, told a news briefing in Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk.

Agencies quoted officials as saying the rig capsized at about 0200 GMT on Sunday around 200 km (125 miles) off the coast of Sakhalin as it was being towed from the eastern peninsula of Kamchatka.

It appeared that the vessel had not been doing drilling work, so no oil spill was likely. The rig's destination was not immediately clear.

While less serious that BP's Macondo disaster, when a blowout caused oil to spew for months into the Gulf of Mexico, the fatal accident will deal a blow to Russia's efforts to step up offshore oil and gas exploration.

Russia has two major offshore projects that are already producing oil off Sakhalin - Sakhalin-1, operated by Exxonmobil and Sakhalin-2, in which state-controlled gas export monopoly Gazprom has a controlling stake.

State-controlled Rosneft this year reached a major deal with Exxon to explore for oil and gas in the Arctic Kara Sea.

Why naked mole rats feel no pain from acid

As mammals go, naked mole rats are one of the strangest. They are exceptionally long-lived and never get cancer, making them very useful for medical researchMovie Camera. Now the secret behind another naked mole rat trait ? feeling no pain from acid ? could help tackle the pain of arthritis.

In most animals, exposure to acid stimulates special channels at the tips of sensory neurons called nociceptors. Ewan Smith and colleagues at the Max-Delbr?ck Center for Molecular Medicine in Berlin, Germany, suspected that these channels behave differently in mole rats.

They were wrong. In both naked mole rats and mice, acid activated the channels. "We found the responses to be largely similar," says Smith.

Stop the pain signal

So the team turned to a different type of sodium channel, called NaV1.7. Also found in nociceptors, these channels become blocked when exposed to acid, stopping the pain signal.

The researchers doused nociceptors from naked mole rats and mice in acid, and found the strength of the pain signal passing through the NaV1.7 channels dropped by 42 per cent in mice, but by 63 per cent in the mole rats.

Smith says there is a balance between the acid-sensing channels that transmit the signal and the NaV1.7 channels that block it. In mice, the balance tips in favour of the acid signal making it to the brain ? but in naked mole rats the balance tips the other way and the pain signal dissipates. "The acid block of NaV1.7 is so strong that the simultaneous activation of acid sensors is irrelevant and no signal is conducted," says Smith.

The team sequenced the gene that codes for the NaV1.7 channel in mole rats, and compared it with SCN9A ? a key gene in the human version of the channel. Humans with mutations to this gene are completely insensitive to pain.

The main difference between the two genes was in a triplet of amino acids that plays a role in determining exactly what acid concentration opens or closes the channel. Smith inserted the mole rat amino acid triplet into the human SCN9A gene, and poured acid over the resulting mutant channel. "Introducing this small sequence resulted in a significantly stronger inhibition of the sodium channel," says Smith.

Arthritis acid

That suggests that this sodium channel could be a target for the development of drugs to prevent the pain caused by acid build-up ? which happens in arthritis and other inflammatory disorders.

Mark Connor at Macquarie University in Sydney, Australia, who was not involved in the study, agrees. "You could potentially develop a drug to bind to that site and reduce its activity to make people less sensitive to pain."

Connor says it's unlikely this is the only painkilling trick up the mole rat's sleeve. They are also insensitive to pain from capsaicin, the essence of chilli pepper. "But capsaicin doesn't affect these sodium channels," he says. He thinks mole rats' nerves may be wired differently to other animals, somehow stifling the pain message.

Classic Console Games Re-Released on Android Smartphones (ContributorNetwork)

Mobile devices like Android smartphones and tablets have sparked a new era in retro gaming. While top-of-the-line smartphones can handle HD games, the slower processors and graphics chips on lower-end models can only handle lower-powered games ... and not just games that were originally made for Android, but games made 10 or more years ago for consoles like the Sega CD and the PSOne.

Some of these games are available unofficially through emulator apps (those that haven't been pulled from the Market), but others have seen official re-releases. Here's a look at some classic console games that have been re-released for Android smartphones and tablets:

Sonic CD

It's not quite as well known as some of the blue hedgehog's other adventures, but Sonic's Sega CD debut was notable for having CD-quality audio, as well as animated cutscenes. The Android re-release features leaderboards, achievements, and 16:9 widescreen instead of the original 4:3 aspect ratio, as well as both the Japanese and North American versions of the soundtrack.

Another Sega title available in the Android Market: ChuChu Rocket, a puzzle game originally developed by Sonic Team for the Sega Dreamcast. Sort of a cross between Lemmings and Pipe Dream, the object is to get space mice past hungry cats and into their rocketship.

Grand Theft Auto 3

Like it or hate it, Rockstar Games' controversial "sandbox" title is now available on Android in a 10th anniversary edition, which features updated graphics with HD resolution. It also features "Gamepad Support for select USB controllers," although its Android Market listing doesn't say which.

GTA's gameplay involves carjacking, shooting people, and running them over, and is not recommended for children.

Original Sony PSOne Games

PSOne games like Xperia Play. Its slide-out game controller, with dual analog touchpads and shoulder buttons, features all the controls needed to play the games without having to cover the screen with your thumbs.

Each game costs $5.99. Other PSOne games, like Crash Bandicoot, are available from Sony's separate store on the Xperia Play.

Crystal Defenders

Square-Enix's Crystal Defenders isn't strictly a console remake, since it was originally made for the iPhone (although it's since appeared on the PlayStation Portable). It's the only official title on the Android Market that's set in a Final Fantasy world, though; specifically, Ivalice, the world of Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.

Crystal Defenders' gameplay is straightforward tower defense, featuring character art and units from the original Game Boy Advance title. Actual Final Fantasy games are available for Android smartphones in Japan through Square-Enix's own market, but it's unclear when or if they'll be brought to Google's Android Market (or to North America).

Humongous plane to serve as flying launch pad for space tourists

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen announced plans to construct a giant aircraft to launch rockets into orbit, eventually for paying passengers.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen announced today (Dec. 13) that he is teaming up again with aerospace design mogul Burt Rutan to develop what the pair is calling a revolutionary approach to private space travel for people, cargo or satellites.

The billionaire investor and philanthropist unveiled the new company Stratolaunch Systems, which aims to create airport-like operations for space travel. The company, headquartered in Huntsville, Ala., will use a giant twin-boom aircraft to launch a rocket and space capsule from the air to carry commercial and government payloads, and eventually paying passengers, into orbit. The first flight is expected to occur within five years.

Once the launch system is proven to be safe and reliable, manned flights will follow, Stratolaunch Systems officials said.

"I have long dreamed about taking the next big step in private space flight after the success of SpaceShipOne ? to offer a flexible, orbital space delivery system," Allen said in a statement. "We are at the dawn of radical change in the space launch industry. Stratolaunch Systems is pioneering an innovative solution that will revolutionize space travel."

This isn't Allen's first foray into the realm of private space travel.

Allen first partnered with Rutan, founder of the aerospace design company Scaled Composites, to bankroll the construction of a manned vehicle capable of reaching the edge of space. In 2004, the?SpaceShipOne suborbital rocket plane?became the first privately built manned craft to reach suborbital space.

In October of that year, SpaceShipOne was piloted to suborbital altitudes of more than 360,000 feet (112 kilometers) on back-to-back flights that helped Rutan and Allen snag the $10 million Ansari X prize.?

Stratolaunch systems will use an aircraft developed by?Scaled Composites?that is expected to be the largest aircraft ever flown, Stratolaunch officials said.

"Paul and I pioneered private space travel with SpaceShipOne, which led to Virgin Galactic?s commercial suborbitalSpaceShipTwo Program," Rutan, who will join Stratolaunch Systems as a board member, said in a statement. "Now, we will have the opportunity to extend that capability to orbit and beyond. Paul has proven himself a visionary with the will, commitment and courage to continue pushing the boundaries of space technology. We are well aware of the challenges ahead, but we have put together an incredible research team that will draw inspiration from Paul?s vision." Japan says stricken nuclear power plant in cold shutdown (Reuters)

TOKYO (Reuters) ? Japan declared its tsunami-stricken Fukushima nuclear power plant to be in cold shutdown on Friday in a major step toward resolving the world's worst nuclear crisis in 25 years.

The Fukushima Daiichi plant, 240 km (150 miles) northeast of Tokyo, was wrecked on March 11 by a huge earthquake and a towering tsunami which knocked out its cooling systems, triggering meltdowns, radiation leaks and mass evacuations.

In making the much-anticipated announcement, Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda drew a line under the crisis phase of the emergency at the plant and highlighted the next challenges: post-disaster clean-up and the safe dismantling of the plant, something experts say could take up to 40 years.

"The reactors have reached a state of cold shutdown," Noda told a government nuclear emergency response meeting.

"A stable condition has been achieved. It is judged that the accident at the plant itself has ceased," he added, noting radiation levels at the boundary of the plant could now be kept at low levels, even in the event of "unforeseeable incidents."

"The government is due to set a clear road map and will do the utmost to decommission the plant," Noda later told a news conference.

A cold shutdown is when water used to cool nuclear fuel rods remains below boiling point, preventing the fuel from reheating. One of the chief aims of the plant's operator, Tokyo Electric Power (Tepco), had been to bring the reactors to cold shutdown by the year-end.

After months of efforts, the water temperature in all three of the affected reactors fell below boiling point by September, but Tepco has been cautious about declaring a cold shutdown, saying it had to see if temperatures and the amount of radiation emitted from the plant remained stable.

The declaration of a cold shutdown could have repercussions well beyond the plant. It is a government pre-condition for allowing about 80,000 residents evacuated from within a 20 km (12 mile) radius of the plant to go home.

But Kazuhiko Kudo, professor of nuclear engineering at Kyushu University, said authorities still needed to determine exactly the status of melted fuel inside the reactors and stabilize a makeshift cooling system, which handles the tens of thousands of tons of contaminated water accumulated on-site.

"What is more important is the next steps the government and Tepco decide to take," Kudo said.

HUGE COSTS, ANXIETY

The government and Tepco will aim to begin removing the undamaged nuclear rods from the plant's spent fuel pools next year. However, retrieval of fuel that melted down in their reactors may not begin for another decade.

The enormous cost of the cleanup and compensating the victims has drained Tepco financially. The government may inject about $13 billion into the company as early as next summer in a de facto nationalization, sources told Reuters last week.

An official advisory panel estimates Tepco may have to pay about 4.5 trillion yen ($57 billion) in compensation in the first two years after the nuclear crisis, and that it will cost 1.15 trillion yen to decommission the plant, though some experts put it at 4 trillion yen ($51 billion) or even more.

Japan also faces a massive cleanup task outside the east coast plant if residents are to be allowed to go home. The Environment Ministry says about 2,400 square km (930 square miles) of land around the plant may need to be decontaminated, an area roughly the size of Luxembourg.

The crisis shook the public's faith in nuclear energy and Japan is now reviewing an earlier plan to raise the proportion of electricity generated from nuclear power to 50 percent by 2030 from 30 percent in 2010.

Japan may not immediately walk away from nuclear power, but few doubt that nuclear power will play a lesser role in future.

Living in fear of radiation is part of life for residents both near and far from the plant. Cases of excessive radiation in vegetables, tea, milk, seafood and water have stoked anxiety despite assurances from public officials that the levels detected are not dangerous.

Chernobyl's experience shows that anxiety is likely to persist for years, with residents living near the former Soviet plant still regularly checking produce for radiation before consuming it 25 years after the disaster.

Researchers assess effects of a world awash in nitrogen

ScienceDaily (Dec. 15, 2011) ? Humans are having an effect on Earth's ecosystems but it's not just the depletion of resources and the warming of the planet we are causing. Now you can add an over-abundance of nitrogen as another "footprint" humans are leaving behind. The only question is how large of an impact will be felt.

In a Perspectives piece in the current issue of Science (Dec. 16, 2011), Arizona State University researcher James Elser outlines some recent findings on the increasing abundance of available nitrogen on Earth. In "A World Awash in Nitrogen," Elser, a limnologist, comments on a new study showing that disruption to Earth's nitrogen balance began at the dawn of the industrial era and was further amplified by the development of the Haber-Bosch process to produce nitrogen rich fertilizers.

Until that time nitrogen, an essential building block to life on Earth and a major but inert component of its atmosphere, had cycled at low but balanced levels over millennia. That balance ended around 1895.

"Humans have more than doubled the rate of nitrogen inputs into global ecosystems, relative to pre-industrial periods, and have changed the amounts of circulating phosphorus (like nitrogen, a key limiting ingredient for crops and other plants) by about 400 percent due to mining to produce fertilizers," Elser said.

The result has been immediate and widespread, he added.

Commenting on a major new finding in Science by G.W. Holtgrieve and colleagues, Elser said that signs of the "new N" appeared in all regions of the Northern Hemisphere in a remarkably coherent manner beginning around 1895, in concert with when fossil fuel combustion and large scale biomass burning accelerated across the globe. Another significant increase came around 1970 coincident with massive increases in industrial nitrogen fixation for fertilizer production, just as the "Green Revolution" got started.

The effects of the high nitrogen inputs "were immediate, and no place in the Northern Hemisphere -- not even the highest reaches of the Arctic -- was safe," Elser stated.

One effect from the increased nitrogen inputs can be seen in our inland water features like lakes, reservoirs and rivers.

"Nitrogen deposition to lakes leads to phytoplankton (at the base of food chain) with low content of the important nutrient phosphorus," Elser said. "This is kind of like 'junk food,' for animals that eat the phytoplankton. Such effects are likely to ripple upward in the food chain."

"Overall, changes in nutrient regimes (due to human acceleration of the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles) cause various problems, but especially reduction in water quality, in water supplies and deterioration of coastal marine fisheries ('dead zones')," Elser added. "In the U.S., conservative estimates indicate that nutrient over-enrichment of inland waters results in about $2.7 billion of annual economic costs annually, due to negative impacts on recreational water usage, waterfront real estate values, the cost of recovery of threatened and endangered species and drinking water provisions."

On a grander timeline the effects could be more telling of humans themselves, Elser said.

"Whether such signals are an ephemeral blip in the stratigraphic record or a sustained shift lasting millennia may, in due time, be seen as an indicator of humanity's success, or failure, in achieving planetary sustainability," he added.
