EyeFi Pro X2 16GB Class 10 handson

Technology's always getting smaller, right? As such, it shouldn't be a surprise that Eye-Fi can now cram 16GB of storage and a WiFi radio into one of its SD cards, but somehow, it still is. This is the latest, the Eye-Fi Pro X2 16GB, the company's first Class 10 unit. It'll be landing on the doorsteps of tech-savvy photographers in the next week, so we thought we'd take a quick look at how things have improved with this year's vintage and if it can justify that $100 price-tag.

Cultivate What You Know to Make Better Decisions, Faster [Decisions]

Cultivate What You Know to Make Better Decisions, FasterMaking quick decisions is tough. With the internet at your fingertips it's easy to let research get in the way, and spend hours obsessively researching the best choice. Scientific American suggests we all take a page from Sherlock Holmes' book for a means to make better decisions, faster.

The idea is based on Sir Arthor Conan Doyle's Sherlock Holmes story "A Study in Scarlet" in which Holmes says:

"I consider that a man's brain originally is like a little empty attic, and you have to stock it with such furniture as you choose. A fool takes in all the lumber of every sort that he comes across, so that the knowledge which might be useful to him gets crowded out, or at best is jumbled up with a lot of other things, so that he has difficulty laying his hands upon it. Now the skillful workman is very careful indeed as to what he takes into his brain-attic. He will have nothing but the tools which may help him in doing his work, but of these he has a large assortment, and all in the most perfect order. It is a mistake to think that that little room has elastic walls and can distend to any extent. Depend upon it and there comes a time when for every addition of knowledge you forget something that you knew before. It is of the highest importance, therefore, not to have useless facts elbowing out the useful ones."

Holmes' point is that we fill our brains with useless knowledge, and that affects not only our decision process, but also our memory. When we make a decision, we have to remove the distractions?the details that don't matter for the decision itself?in order to make a choice quickly. Scientific American explains it like so:

In a decision, it is crucial to ignore so-called distracters, things that are actually irrelevant but that can influence our judgment if we are not careful. These come in many guises: emotions, for one, and personal impressions (which, while sometimes useful, are often completely beside the point); or, additional information that should make no difference but that actually does impact our decision.

The point is that your mind is filled with useless knowledge, and so is the internet. When you're making a choice, clean out your "mind attic" and tune your brain to only the facts that matter for the decision itself, not the extraneous information that has nothing to do with it. This goes for everything from choosing a restaurant for a Friday night dinner to picking out a new computer to buy. You don't need to remember every detail, so don't bother trying.

Thanks for joining in and sharing all your healthy, sugar-free and vegan recipes. I love seeing what you whip up each week! And I hope you?ll also share on twitter and Facebook (there?s a new, shorter twitter hashtag, too, so you can write more about the food: #WWknd as well as the original #WellnessWeekend).

Here?s How to Participate:

The event occurs once a week, starting Thursdays at 8:00 PM my time and running until the following Monday at midnight.

  1. Simply link up a vegan recipe you made (and posted about) that contains health-supporting ingredients. This means any good-for-you whole foods, especially those with antioxidant properties or ?functional foods? (ie, offering naturally medicinal or health-promoting qualities?such as garlic, coconut oil, all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.)?but any fresh, real food is welcome! No-no?s include white flour or sugar, highly processed foods, or animal products. Items like vegan protein powder, grain or bean flours, or coconut milk are fine even though they are technically ?processed,? since they either contain a single ingredient, or could technically be made at home. Also, if you render a recipe vegan-friendly by adding a vegan option to your ingredients, your post will be good to go!
  2. This is a recipe event. Your blog post must contain a recipe.
  3. You may link up older posts from your archives as long as they contain a link to this post. Please do not link up any posts you have previously shared at an earlier Wellness Weekend event.
  4. Please link the post with your recipe, NOT your blog?s home page or another event page. The post must contain a recipe.
  5. You may submit up to three recipes, but please follow the guidelines for each one individually. ONLY ONE THUMBNAIL FROM EACH BLOG POST, PLEASE. If your post contains two suitable recipes, link up once and people will still see all your fabulous recipes when they click on the linky. :)
  6. Please mention this event and include a link back to this post so that others can find all the recipes posted!
  7. Feel free to use the blog badge, above (or see the left sidebar of this page?if you need the html code, let me know and I?ll send it to you). Many thanks to Adrienne of Whole New Mom for setting up the badge code for me!

PLEASE NOTE: In order to promote your posts and the event, I like to occasionally tweet, mention on Facebook, or pin your blog post(s). On occasion, I will repost your photos in the following week?s Wellness Weekend as well. If you prefer that I NOT use your photos or links, please let me know in the comments below, or send an email to me at dietdessertdogsATgmailDOTcom. Thanks!

I will reluctantly remove any links that don?t comply. I apologize, but I will no longer be able to leave a comment telling you that I?ve removed a non-compliant link. I hate to have to remove links! PLEASE READ THE GUIDELINES BEFORE POSTING!

And n0w. . . what have you been cooking up lately? Please share!

Romney gains ground on Obama on economic issues: poll

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republican challenger Mitt Romney has argued for more than a year that he would do a better job of boosting the sluggish U.S. economy than President Barack Obama, and new polling data indicates that voters may be coming around to his point of view.

Four weeks before the November 6 U.S. election, Romney has erased Obama's advantage on a range of pocketbook issues that are foremost on voters' minds, according to Reuters/Ipsos tracking poll figures.

Likely voters now say that the former private equity executive has a better plan for the economy, job creation and the federal budget deficit. They also say Romney would be more effective in Washington.

Obama continues to hold an advantage when it comes to taxes, the Social Security retirement program and protecting American jobs. Obama also still leads on a range of personal issues such as likability and whether he understands regular people.

The online poll, taken over the course of the seven days leading up to Sunday, partially reflects the aftermath of Romney's strong debate performance against Obama in the first of their three face-to-face match-ups.

Obama's advantage had already started to fade before the debate as Romney recovered from a series of campaign missteps. The current findings reflect the underlying reality of a closely divided electorate and Republicans' traditional advantage on fiscal issues, Ipsos pollster Cliff Young said.

"It's a much tighter race and Romney became much more presidential in people's eyes," Young said. "Things are probably back to where they should be."

The Reuters/Ipsos daily tracking poll has shown Obama's lead fading in a head-to-head match-up of the two candidates since the debate. An update in the head-to-head numbers is expected later on Tuesday. Other polls have shown Obama's lead slipping as well.

Romney gained the most ground on the economic questions that were the focus of last Wednesday's debate.

In the week ended September 30, Obama held a lead of 4.3 percentage points when voters were asked which candidate has a better plan for the economy. Romney now holds a lead of 4.6 percentage points on that question.

On job creation, Romney now leads by 2.4 percentage points, erasing Obama's 5.8 percentage point lead on that issue. The bad numbers for Obama come despite a monthly jobs report last Friday that showed unemployment fell to a nearly four-year low in September.

The two were tied on the question of the federal budget deficit, but Romney now leads by 7.7 percentage points.

Romney has also erased Obama's 4.4 percentage point advantage on which candidate would be more effective in Washington. The two are now tied.

Obama's lead on taxes has fallen from 10.5 percentage points to 4.9 percentage points. His lead on Social Security has fallen from 12.4 percentage points to 6.7 percentage points.

Obama's advantage on personal issues remains intact. His 25 percentage point advantage on likability is essentially unchanged from the week earlier, as is his 14 percentage point advantage on which candidate "understands people like me."

The poll relied on a sample of 1,689 likely voters. The precision of Reuters/Ipsos polls is measured using a credibility interval. In this case, it has a credibility interval of 5.1 percentage points.

NYPD officer who shot unarmed motorist 'eager' to tell his story

NEW YORK (Reuters) - The New York police detective who fatally shot an unarmed motorist last week is "more than eager" to tell his side of the story to any investigating authorities, his attorney said Monday after receiving word the city's police commissioner called for a grand jury probe of the incident.

New York Detective Hassan Hamdy's "pulling the trigger did not occur in a bubble," said attorney Philip Karasyk. "Way before that happened, the driver was acting in such a manner as to continuously raise the level of threat" to the police, he said.

The police said Hamdy shot Noel Polanco, 22, just after 5 a.m. on October 4 after pulling the U.S. Army reservist over for erratic driving on a Queens highway. Karasyk said his client maintains that Polanco ignored police orders to put his hands in the air and instead reached down with both hands to the car's floorboard.

An NYPD statement released last week is consistent with Krasyk's description of the lead-up to the shooting.

But witness Diane DeFerrari, 37, a bartender whom Polanco was driving home from her work at a Queens nightclub, said Polanco's hands never left the wheel, according to attorney Sanford Rubenstein, who is also representing Polanco's mother.

The conflicting accounts have led New York Police Commissioner Ray Kelly to call for a grand jury investigation into the shooting, The New York Post reported on Monday.

The shooting "will require what I believe to be a grand jury investigation to determine precisely what happened there," Kelly told the paper.

An NYPD spokesman did not respond to requests for comment on Kelly's remarks.

Karasyk declined to make Hamdy available for an interview.

Queens District Attorney Richard Brown has launched an investigation into the incident, as has the NYPD.

A funeral for Polanco with U.S. military honors is being planned, Rubenstein added.

Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif ? Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari win Men?s Doubles title at Chinese Taipei Open

Malaysia?s Mohd Zakry Abdul Latif and Mohd Fairuzizuan Mohd Tazari proved their worth on court and remained successful in winning the Men?s Doubles title at the Chinese Taipei Open Grand Prix Gold 2012 in Chinese Taipei, on Sunday, October 7.

The in-form Mohd Zakry and Mohd Tazari, who were the second seeds in the Men?s Doubles main draw of the event, put up spectacular show of top quality badminton and they defeated the top seeded Angga Pratama and Ryan Agung Saputra of Indonesia in a completely lopsided fashion.

Mohd Zakry and Mohd Tazari was in remarkable form as they played with precision and easily ended up the title match in straight game with a stunning difference on score board by consuming just 27 minutes on court.

In the meanwhile, the top seeded Angga and Ryan could not even put up strong show as they failed to play positive badminton and also lost their control over the pace of rallies.

The Indonesian shuttlers remained struggling on court throughout the final contest and ultimately lost the match without showing strong character.

In the first game, Mohd Zakry and Mohd Tazari took an early lead without any trouble and they managed to stay in lead with a reasonable margin of 11-8 until the end of opening half.

After the break, the Malaysian duo continued playing dictating game without facing any considerable problem from their higher ranked challengers.

Mohd Zakry and Mohd Tazari were in complete control in the ending points of first set and they took the set with a stunning 21-12 score on the board.

In the second set, Mohd Zakry and Mohd Tazari again gave a shocking treatment to their top seeded opponents by playing incredible badminton and took a staggering 11-2 lead until the end of first part.

After the break, Malaysian players did not slow down their speed at any stage and they easily managed to end up the set with a seven-point difference of 21-14.

Mohd Zakry and Mohd Tazari won the title in a dominating fashion by finishing off the final battle with a crushing 21-12 and 21-14 score on the board.

Me and My Doctor: TMA Piloting New Project: Walk with a Doc

?

Dr. Pike, member of the Texas Medical Association Foundation Board of Trustees and a plastic surgeon with Scott & White Healthcare, is the first physician in Texas to pilot the program. ?I see this as a prescription for healthier living.?I can help my patients?take ?actual? steps toward improving their health and fitness, while having fun,? says Dr. Pike.

?

Walk with a Doc was started in Columbus, Ohio, in 2005 and has expanded to 23 states. The program encourages walking because it is easier on the joints than running. Plus, it?s safe ? with a doctor?s consent ? for people with orthopedic ailments and heart conditions, and for those more than 20 percent overweight.

Dr. Pike is hosting the walk again Saturday, Nov. 3, at 9 am and on Dec. 8 at 9 am. At each walk, she will address a different health topic and answer questions.? If you want to walk with Dr. Pike, meet her at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown.

Students demanded the passage of Assembly Bill 1081, also known as the Trust Act.

California?s governor late Sunday vetoed a bill that would have allowed local authorities to free undocumented immigrants from custody despite requests by immigration officials to hold them for possible deportation proceedings.

The controversial practice has long been criticized by immigration advocates who say the federal requests, known as detainers or holds, cast a wide dragnet that ensnared even those who had committed minor crimes or no offenses. But Immigration and Customs Enforcement had said the program was instrumental in helping enforce immigration laws and in getting violent offenders off the streets.

In his veto message, Gov. Edmund G. Brown Jr. said he could not sign the bill?because under it, ?local officers would be prohibited from complying?with an immigration detainer unless the person arrested was charged with, or has been previously convicted of, a serious or violent felony.

?Unfortunately, the list of offenses codified in the bill is fatally flawed because it omits many serious crimes,? he said. ?For example, the bill would bar local cooperation? even when the person arrested has been convicted of certain crimes involving child abuse, drug trafficking, selling weapons, using children to sell drugs, or gangs. I believe it's unwise to interfere with a sheriffs discretion? to comply with a detainer issued for people with these kinds of troubling criminal records.?

Brown noted he would work with lawmakers to improve the legislation and said undocumented immigrants ?play a major role in California's economy,?with many performing low-wage jobs that others don't want.

?Comprehensive? immigration? reform -- including a path to citizenship -- would provide tremendous economic? benefits and is long overdue,? he wrote. ?Until we have immigration reform, federal agents shouldn?t try to coerce local law enforcement officers into detaining people who?ve been picked up for minor offenses and pose no reasonable threat to their community.?

Immigration activists denounced Brown?s veto, comparing it to Arizona?s controversial immigration law that includes a provision forcing those stopped by police to show their immigration papers.

"By vetoing the Trust Act Governor Brown has failed California's immigrant communities, imperiling civil rights and leaving us all less safe. The President's disastrous Secure Communities program is replicating Arizona's model of immigration enforcement nationally, causing a human rights crisis. Immigration and Customs Enforcement strong-armed the Governor to defend its deportation quota instead of defending Californian's rights,? Pablo Alvarado, executive director of the National Day Laborer Organizing Network, said in a statement. ?On this sad day, we renew our commitment to fight to keep our families together despite the Governor and the President's insistence on seeing them torn apart."

Alvarado was referring to ICE?s ?Secure Communities? program, under which the FBI shares fingerprints of those arrested with federal immigration authorities who check to see if the person is not legally in the U.S. or if they can be removed due to a criminal conviction.

ICE says it prioritizes the deportation of those who present the most significant threats to public safety, and that it has deported more than 147,400 convicted criminal undocumented immigrants, including more than 54,200 individuals convicted of violent offenses such as murder, rape and the sexual abuse of children, under the program.?

In a statement last week, ICE Deputy Press Secretary Gillian Christensen said the agency didn?t comment on pending state legislation.

?The identification and removal of criminal offenders is ICE?s highest priority and over the past three and half years, ICE has been dedicated to implementing smart, effective reforms to the immigration system that allow it to focus its resources on priority individuals,? she wrote in a statement, noting that the Department of Homeland Security would continue to exercise prosecutorial discretion for certain people who came to the U.S. as children and other individuals who were ?low priorities.?

?The federal government alone sets these priorities and places detainers on individuals arrested on criminal charges to ensure that dangerous criminal aliens and other priority individuals are not released from prisons and jails into our communities,? she added.

Several counties and cities have enacted ordinances that limit police cooperation with federal immigration authorities, The New York Times has reported.

Assemblyman Tom Ammiano, a San Francisco Democrat?who sponsored the legislation, told The Times that they were ?trying to bring some sanity and clarity to a program that I frankly think has gone rogue.?

?We want police to distinguish between the woman selling tamales and the gang member who has a record,? he said.

Meanwhile, Brown signed legislation allowing for some undocumented immigrants to get driver's licenses. It is intended for those who qualify for the federal government's deferred action policy, which provides a two-year work permit and a reprieve from deportation for those who were brought to the U.S. as children. There are some 300,000 youth in California who are currently eligible for the policy, according to the Immigration Policy Center.
